OPEN Project Visiting From Shetland

01st June 2018

On Friday 1 June Befriend a Child will played host to two members of staff and 12 volunteers aged 16 to 25 from the OPEN project in Shetland.

The visitors learned about the intandem mentoring programme – a Scottish Government initiative being delivered in the North East by Befriend a Child.  The programme is for children aged 8 to 14 years who are looked after home by the local authority.  The aim of the OPEN project is to develop their own peer mentoring programme.

On the day the team got an overview of the processes involved, what the programme entails and how it is approached and delivered by Befriend a Child’s mentors. An intandem mentor talked about the challenges and the benefits the programme brings not for both mentors and those being mentored.

Sandra McGuigan, intandem Coordinator at Befriend a Child said. ‘This is a fantastic training opportunity for the OPEN project.  I hope the knowledge and the processes that I can share will allow the group to set up and run a successful mentoring project in Shetland.’
