Volunteers' Week 2018 - Karen's Story

04th June 2018

I was introduced to Fiona in August 2014.  She was a lovely 7 year old girl and I couldn’t wait to do lots of fun stuff with and become good friends with. Our first outing was to Duthie Park for a picnic, we had a great day exploring the Winter Gardens, throwing pennies at the McPuddock the frog and enjoying our picnic in the sun.  Our second outing was at Befriend a Child’s base, in the kitchen where I thought we’d make some nice treats for her to take home.  Our ‘Top Hats’ came out first-class however because we were chatting and having so much fun our choc chip cookies were baked to the size of saucers, we laughed so much from then on we both knew we were going to be great pals…!!  We shared the same jokes and had the same passion for food which always seemed to be the topic of our conversations, although we decided to move away from the kitchen for a while and try other activities.

Over the past four years we’ve had many road trips, we’ve been to Montrose, MacDuff and one of our favourites has to be Stonehaven where we have caught crabs with a net, fed the ducks, dodged the seagulls while eating our ice creams and walked from the beach to the harbour chatting about all sorts from school to animals to favourite pizza toppings.  Fiona and I also love going to the cinema, after our first visit we found out that we both enjoyed a good movie and an ice cream and loved our after-movie review conversation.

We’ve had so many fun outings and also educational ones too, we’ve been horse riding, trampolining, had fun in Satrosphere Science Centre been to the Aquarium and more recently visited the Pets Corner in Hazlehead Park to meet the giant python and the tarantula, which Fiona loved.

Over the last 4 years I have seen Fiona grow from a loving, caring girl to a beautiful, kind, thoughtful, confident young lady, she is passionate in everything she does, I have thoroughly enjoyed my 4 years as a Befriender and couldn’t have been rewarded more, I have been blessed to watch Fiona flourish and be part of it.  We will be friends for many years to come.

From Summer outings to Halloween Parties, Christmas Parties, craft days and so much more it has been an absolute pleasure and I am very proud to have been part of ‘Befriend a Child’ and all the amazing work that’s done in making differences in children’s’ lives, for that I thank you.
