Deloitte Impact Report Launch

In 2016, Befriend a Child staff were deeply grateful to hear that staff at Deloitte in Aberdeen had chosen us as their charity partner for three years. Since then the partnership has grown and developed with us benefiting from fundraising events and team development activities.

At the same time, the relationship with the Aberdeen branch has offered us the opportunity to become part of the Deloitte One Million Futures programme which includes much needed and very valued pro bono support across a number of key areas.

We were extremely lucky to be introduced to two Deloitte workers, based in Belfast, who have been working with us since the beginning of 2017 to evaluate and demonstrate the impact of the work we undertake. In order to create this Impact Report, Colin and Ryan conducted consultations with Befriend a Child staff, children and young people, the Youth Council, Board Members, volunteers, parents / guardians of befriended children and referrers.

In total, they undertook 30 consultations along with a review of the charity’s performance and almost two decades worth of statistical information. They examined the number of volunteers, children and young people we have supported year on year, as far back as the year 2000.

This information allowed them to clearly see how demand for our service has increased dramatically during this period of time. View the impact report for yourself.

Richard Stewart, Head of Marketing, Fundraising and External Affairs said:

"I think our partnership with Deloitte is a shining example of corporate CSR in practice and it is one I am proud to be part of.  At a time when companies are increasingly giving in-kind and pro bono support Deloitte have demonstrated just how valuable that can be.  Befriend a Child now have a great opportunity to engage and inspire all our stakeholders and new supporters – all of whom can be confident that their contribution is making a real, worthwhile and measurable impact"

Jackie Hothersall, CEO of Befriend a Child said;

“We are extremely grateful to Deloitte, Colin and Ryan for their time, knowledge and skills which has resulted in the publication of the Impact Report which is significantly valuable in terms of how we will conduct our business in future"

One of the most important issues which arose from their work and calculations has been out the information calculated for the social return on investment. This process and method allows us to understand the true value of our core befriending scheme and to share this information appropriately.

The Report which can be viewed here concludes that our befriending service delivered a positive social return on investment of £6.13 for every £1 spent which we hope demonstrates the high value of using volunteers to achieve highly positive outcomes.
With over 1100 children having benefited from our befriending service since 2000 and newer services, like our MCR mentoring in schools programme, expanding, we look forward to growing our area of affect and the social return on investment, even further.
