Charity Shop Closing

30th August 2018

It is with sadness we announce that, after four years of trading, the Befriend a Child charity shop will be closing on 12thOctober 2018.

Despite the best efforts of our wonderful staff and volunteers to increase sales and profits over the past year, we have not seen the necessary uplift. The shop lease is now due for renewal and we have taken the decision to close.

In recent months we have worked hard to turn around the shop’s performance. We have tried initiatives such as consulting with established city-centre retailers, making-over the shop interior and brightening the exterior, increasing our customer service levels and recruiting a new team of volunteers. Unfortunately, it was not to be. As an independent charity, we need to be mindful of the return we generate from our efforts and in this regard the numbers just don’t add up.

Sarah Misra, CEO said: “The hard-economic conditions across the UK are being faced by retailers at both ends of the spectrum as we can see both premium and discount brands struggling. What’s more, we face competition for stock and customers from other charity shops across the region, many of which have a larger supporter base and network of operations behind the scenes, which give them an advantage.”

Julie Clark, Shop Manager said: “While the decision to close the shop is obviously disappointing, over the years it has made a huge contribution to Befriend a Child.

As well as the income it has raised, having a presence on Holburn Street has helped boost the charity’s profile, raise awareness of the issue and recruit volunteers interested in befriending the children. We have also been able to give hundreds of volunteers an opportunity to support the cause and the community by working in the shop.”

The shop’s final day of trading will be Friday 12thOctober and to help it go out with a bang we would be sincerely grateful for donations of unwanted goods, except for furniture, electrical items and bedding.

The closure of the shop will not affect the charity’s service delivery.  Indeed, we are currently recruiting volunteer befrienders and mentors to support our existing services and to help expand our latest service – Transition Mentoring which supports children in p7 and S1. Interested people should contact the Operations team on 01224 210060.

The charity’s Board, Senior Management team and staff want to thank everyone who has supported the charity shop over the years and invites anyone who wants to find a way to stay involved to get in touch. And of course, if you are passing before the shop closes, please drop in to say hello and grab yourself a bargain.
