At just 10 years old, Sophie carries worries that no child should have to face.
Life at home is unpredictable. Her mum experiences significant mental health challenges, leaving Sophie never knowing what each day will bring. Instead of simply being a child, Sophie has taken on the role of a young carer, worrying about whether her mum has eaten, slept, and is okay. On difficult days, she is unable to attend school because of the situation at home.
Sophie lives with her mum and her 18-year-old brother, who is hoping to move away to attend college. While he has been a source of support, he also faces his own challenges and is preparing to start the next chapter of his life. As a result, Sophie may soon have even less support at home, making the need for a trusted adult outside the family even more important.
Despite everything she is coping with, Sophie is a kind, quiet and resilient young girl with a small group of friends at school. She would benefit enormously from having a consistent, caring adult who is there just for her.
A volunteer befriender could provide Sophie with something every child deserves â a safe space away from the pressures of home, where she can relax, have fun, try new activities, and simply be a child. Regular outings would help her build confidence, improve her wellbeing, create happy memories, and give her the opportunity to focus on herself instead of the responsibilities she carries every day.
Right now, Sophie urgently needs someone who will listen, encourage, and remind her that she matters too. Could that someone be you?
Reach out to a member of our team today at volunteer@befriendachild.org.uk if you have a spare couple of hours each month and believe you could be the volunteer befriender Sophie needs.
