After seeing a post on Facebook from Befriend a Child about recruiting mentors, Sarah knew she wanted to volunteer because she was passionate about helping a local child develop skills and reach their goals. Sarah also felt a programme like mentoring was something she and other children could have benefitted from when she was younger. Sarah was matched with a 13-year-old girl called Lola, who was referred to the service due to having low self-esteem and confidence and difficulties at home.
The pair have been matched for about 8 months and although a short time, have hit it off straight away. They get on so well that they understand each other’s humour and sarcasm, making outings all that more fun!
Sarah was keen to introduce Lola to different activities and events happening around Aberdeen, including some she may have never experienced before. On their first outing they put together a bucket list of things they wanted to do and since then they have been gradually ticking things off. Their outings have consisted of activities such as pizza making at Befriend a Child HQ, cinema trips and fun at the trampoline park. They have also come along to the group events run by Befriend a Child such as the Easter party. One big highlight for Sarah and Lola was going to the P&J Live for the Van Gogh experience, as this was something Lola had been desperate to visit as she loves to be creative.
When Sarah was asked about the changes she’s seen in Lola since the mentoring started, she said:
“I’ve seen positive changes in Lola, she’s beginning to think and act more independently. She will quickly tell me her likes and dislikes. She’s also shown an interest in planning our days out, even down to checking when the next bus is and wanting to budget our days out”
When Sarah was asked what her favourite thing about mentoring was, she said:
“I think my favourite thing about mentoring is celebrating all the little wins along the way, they really mean a lot to me. It’s been amazing to watch Lola’s confidence grow, she’s become a lot chattier and more open about what she wants to do and the goals she wants to set for herself. Every time we meet, I look forward to hearing what she’s been up to and what she’s excited to do next!”
Sarah and Lola’s journey shows just how special the mentoring relationship can be. In only a short time, Lola has grown in confidence, independence and self-belief, while Sarah has found joy in being part of that progress. Their bond is built on laughter, encouragement and shared experiences, which is a reminder of the incredible difference a mentor can make in a young person’s life.
