Sophia’s journey as a volunteer with Befriend a Child began in 2017 when she was seeking a way to contribute to her community outside of work. Without children of her own, Sophia was drawn to the charity’s mission. After the training process, she was matched with Izzy, a four-year-old girl, marking the start of a long and transformative friendship.
When Sophia first met Izzy, she recalls a shy, reserved little girl in need of consistency and support. Izzy’s early life had been marked by unpredictability, and her initial nervousness reflected the challenges she faced. The first meetings were quiet and tentative, but Sophia’s patience and consistency allowed Izzy to gradually open up. Over time, small outings, like walks in the park or trips for ice cream helped foster trust and connection. In the early days, Sophia recalls moments when Izzy was reluctant to leave her side, reflecting the insecurity and uncertainty in her young life. Over time, consistent support reassured Izzy that Sophia would remain a steady presence.
Over the years together, Sophia has witnessed Izzy’s remarkable growth. From a shy young girl to a confident teenager, Izzy has developed a stronger sense of self, while Sophia has gained invaluable skills in communication, empathy and understanding the unique needs of a child navigating life’s challenges.
Sophia reflects on the special bond they have developed:
“I get so much out of it, as I think she does. It’s been wonderful to watch her grow, gain confidence and navigate big life changes, like starting high school.”
The journey hasn’t been without obstacles. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant challenge, requiring Sophia and Izzy to adapt to virtual interaction through video calls and online activities. Watching Izzy struggle with schoolwork and the restrictions of lockdown was difficult.
Also, navigating Izzy’s transition into her teenage years has been wonderful to witness but has required flexibility. Activities and interests evolve, and Sophia learned to balance creativity with simplicity, understanding that sometimes the joy is in the small moments, like sharing a hot chocolate or enjoying a walk together.
Sophia encourages anyone considering befriending to take the leap:
“I honestly can’t explain how much you’ll get out of it. If you have a stressful day and you know that you’re going on an outing, it’s like a little escape from your own reality and I guess it’s the same for the child. Being able to do that for someone and seeing how happy they are and how much they appreciate it, is so rewarding.”
The story of Sophia and Izzy is a testament to the profound impact that consistent, caring support can have over time. Their relationship illustrates how befriending can foster resilience, confidence and personal growth for both the child and volunteer. Over eight years, simple acts of companionship have blossomed into a deeply meaningful and enduring friendship.
