The
annual Befriend A Child quiz night attracted a fantastic 32 teams to the
United Services Club on Friday, November 20th and saw last year’s
winners triumph once again. Competing under the name ‘Could You Go a
Chicken Supper Duncan Peter?’ the winners racked up an impressive 80
points to take the Karen Marr Trophy ahead of ‘Them in the Corner’ in
second spot. The team from Henderson Loggie took third place.
This year’s quiz saw the usual array of bizarre rounds and (bad) jokes,
with visits from Santa Claus and the King of Pop himself. Rounds ranged
from musical countdown conundrums to famous songs sung in broad Doric,
with a little helping of Christmas-themed general knowledge thrown in
for good measure.
After a delicious buffet and busy raffle, Befriend A Child’s Alan
Sanderson rounded off the evening with a disco. Special thanks to the
winners for generously donating back £60 of the prize money, and special
commiserations to the Newburgh Mafia. Well someone has to finish last!

Befriend A Child Scoop a Tasty Treat

Ice Cream manufacturers Mackie’s of Scotland have
turned their hand to an all together more savoury snack with the launch
of a new range of potato crisps.
And the local company – based near Rothienorman –
generously decided to donate 20 boxes of the delicious crisps to
Befriend A Child.
The snacks will be very popular with the children
attending the Halloween Party at the United Services Club on November 1st
– and I’m sure the volunteers will enjoy sampling a few of the flavours
too!
More information on Mackie’s Crisps can be found at

Aberdeen-based 80:20 Procurement Services have kindly donated a
four-figure bonus to help Befriend A Child.
After
significantly increasing their spending with local engineering products
supplier Brammer over the past 12 months, 80:20 earned enough ‘Brammer
Points’ to receive £2,700 worth of free goods.
But
in keeping with its business ethos, 80:20 reported the rebate to its
main client BP and both companies have agreed to donate the money to
charity. 80:20 has decided to round the donation up to £3,000.
80:20
Director Mandi Dorward said: “We’re delighted to help such a worthwhile
charity such as Befriend A Child. I was extremely impressed with
everyone at the charity and their commitment and passion to helping
children in Aberdeen.
“The
bonus due to 80:20 was a major surprise to us as we do not accept
rebates from any of our suppliers thus ensuring that we provide a
value-for-money service for our clients. After discussions with BP, we
both agreed that the right thing to do was to make a donation to local
charity.
“80:20 has decided to make Befriend A Child our nominated charity and we
will continue to support them in any way we can in the future.
"80:20 Procurement
Services is based at the city's East Tullos Industrial Estate and
employs 14 staff.

Befriend A Child are ‘game’ for any new fund-raising
venture and thanks to Andrew Sage Art and Entertainment Ltd, we stand to
make £1 for every online unit sold of his creation, Symbotica.
Local businessman Andrew has very kindly agreed to support our work with
vulnerable children while also promoting his simple, adaptable and fun
new card game.
Symbotica is a game
consisting of cards showing coloured symbols; the premise is to place
each card so that it matches either the colour or symbol of the
surrounding cards. The game area is restricted to 8 cards across and 8
up and down.
The game can be played
in four different ways: the Standard, Simple and Five Card Symbotica
games and the one player Symbotica Challenge.
Beyond the original
Symbotica games, the cards can be used for many other games for various
levels of skill and fun such as snap, pairs, set collecting, solitaire -
or people can even create their own games!
To purchase Symbotica,
and help Befriend A Child to Turn a Frown Upside down at the same time,

Befriend A Child
Committee member Liz Pirrie saddled up for a tough personal challenge in
August as she pedalled her way around the gruelling Gore Bike Wear
Sportive Series at Selkirk. And despite being disappointed with herself
for cycling (in her words) ‘only 45 miles’ on the day, Liz has plenty to
be proud of, having raised a fantastic £637 for Befriend A Child.
In true Scottish
fashion, the day started with pouring rain, howling winds
and unseasonably low temperatures. The route started with a climb of
over 300 meters in the first 4 miles and Liz was forced to stop half way
up to let the feeling of nausea pass before continuing.
Liz commented: “It
took me two hours to reach the first feed stop at 25 miles and at that
point I had to make the decision to drop down to the 45 mile route or be
out on the road for (probably) 10 hours in those awful conditions!
“I finished the 45
miles in about 5 hours, having tackled some 1600 meters of climbing.
“What goes up must
come down and I must confess I much prefer speeding down a hill at 30mph
to crawling up it at 5mph!”
We would like to thank and congratulate
Liz for her magnificent effort and dedication to raising funds for
Aberdeen’s only 1:1 befriending service, despite the pain and unpleasant
conditions!
The
second annual Befriend A Child Golf Challenge Cup attracted 7
teams and also great weather at Inchmarlo on Friday, June 26. A
healthy competition between the teams saw Edinburgh based Scott
Cappola emerge triumphant from the Stableford competition. Team
member Dean Coppola took the medal for longest drive at the 13th,
while Allied Surveyors’ Gordon Gibb scooped the prize for nearest
the pin at the 15th. Grampian Electrical Services had
the misfortune of finishing in seventh spot, but there were no
losers on the day, with Befriend A Child raising over £2500.
A raffle was also drawn on the day with the grand prize of a weekend
break for two at the Hilton Schiphol in Amsterdam, which went to
Paul Hislop of Portlethen.

The Marathon Man
Befriender Dan
Warrender is bravely pulling on his trainers and tackling the
Glasgow Half Marathon on Sunday, September 6th in aid of Befriend A
Child.
Dan has setup
a online sponsor form at www.mycharitypage.com/dan. If you have some
spare cash to help ease the 13 miles of pain then please sponsor him
and leave a message!
Said Dan:
“I've never done anything like this before, but since stopping
smoking a couple of years ago I've been pretty active, doing weights
and going to a kung-fu class. I'm training by running for 8-10 miles
twice a week, and despite the odd blister its going good. I've set a
fundraising target of £400, and so far I have £100 so it’s going
well, but still all donations are warmly received!
GES
Veterans came out on top in the second annual Befriend A Child
5-a-side tournament on Sunday, May 3rd. A total
of ten teams took part in the competition, which placed the
emphasis on fun and saw mixed teams of all levels pulling on
their trainers for a day of indoor football. The event was
generously sponsored by Eden Springs who supplied much needed
bottled water to keep the ‘athletes’ fully hydrated.
The Wooden
Spoon was awarded to the Dream Team while Sophie Little was
awarded the prize for Player of the Tournament.

A TEAM of plucky cyclists from SMS Ltd (Specialist Management Services) in Dyce successfully completed a 51 mile cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh on the14th September.
And in the process, the team raised almost £2000 for Befriend A Child funds.
Team member Andrew Kinsler said that it was a hard challenge but a worthwhile one with a large field of fellow fund-raisers taking part alongside them.
Thanks very much to the guys from SMS!

Befriend A Child are more than £1200 better off thanks to the efforts of a team of four men from Inverurie.
The Kemnay Youth Legends team (from left) Ewan Lyle, Duncan Peter, Phil Adam and Mark Ingram who successfully finished the First Monster Challenge at Loch Ness.
The Kemnay Youth Legends – including the charity’s own Communications and Funding Officer Duncan Peter – tackled the second annual First Monster Challenge in Inverness on Saturday, September 13th. The tough 120km duathlon saw the lads running and cycling over all manner of terrain including forest paths and the Great Glen Way!
And the foursome – Ewan Lyle, Duncan Peter, Mark Ingram and Phil Adam – completed the gruelling task in a time of 8 hours, 25 minutes.
Their efforts were helped on the way by sponsorship from The Black Bull Inn in Inverurie, the Cray Trust and the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative.
