5 cyclists,
14 days,
1116 miles,
1 local charity!

Having grown up in Tillydrone and Northfield, Kyle Hewitt is well aware of the issues and pressures which can have an impact on the development of young people in Aberdeen. Despite enjoying a loving childhood himself, Kyle saw friends who were not so fortunate and lacked the care and attention of a positive role model in their lives. And it’s that personal experience which has driven the 23 year-old to want to make a difference.

Through the Vodafone World of Difference scheme – which allows employees the opportunity to take up paid placements with a charity of their choice for two months - Kyle has dreamt up a gruelling challenge which will test his own physical strength and raise vital funds for Befriend A Child, a charity which he values highly. He has even joined the ranks of the more than 130 Befrienders who give up a few hours of time each month to spend time with a young person in the City.

But first up for Kyle is the challenge of a lifetime. Along with four fellow cyclists, Kyle will be bravely tackling a 1,116 mile cycle through wind, rain and shine from Land’s End in southwest Cornwall, to the most northerly point of Scotland, John O Groats. The challenge kicks off on Monday, September 6th.

“The work that Befriend a Child do really makes a difference locally, “ commented Kyle. I have been blessed with the chance to help thanks to the Vodafone foundation, but I never before thought how short a time two months is. After you get to know the people and the way in which the organisation works, there really is not a lot of time left to make a World of Difference!”

Kyle needs your support – but don’t worry, you won’t have to dig your bike out from the garage and dust off your knee pads! Instead, he would be extremely grateful for any sponsorship you can spare, no matter how small. Every penny raised will help Kyle achieve his goal of making life just a little better for a child in Aberdeen. You can pledge your support for Kyle by visiting www.mycharitypage.com/KyleHewitt/.

A Killer Evening!

Befriend A Child’s latest fund-raising murder mystery event made a big splash as an audience of 75 enjoyed the acting talents of the Befriend A Child Players.

The group of staff and committee members performed A Killer Cruise at the Carmelite Hotel and raised an impressive £645.

The guests enjoyed a two course meal of carrot and coriander soup followed by chicken wrapped in bacon, and had to put on their thinking caps to try to solve the apparent murder of travel agent, Sunny Daze.

Although none of the teams were able to identify the culprit, the closest guess came from ‘Ace Marlin is a Girl’ who were awarded with certificates for their sleuthing efforts.

The third annual ball at Ardoe House proved another success on February 26th, with £14,000 raised towards the work of Befriend a Child.

As well as the usual combination of fund-raising raffles and an auction, we also held the first ever Befriend a Child Champion Awards in recognition of our valued supporters.

Music was provided by The Limit, who churned out a crowd pleasing combination of pop, rock and ceilidh which meant the dance floor was consistently packed. And the staff at Ardoe did a fine job in serving a fantastic meal of Butternut Squash soup, pork loin with cider jus and blueberry cheesecake.

“It was a wonderful evening as always and we are so grateful to all those who attended,” noted Chief Executive Karen Farquhar. “To have 250 supporters of our organisation in one room is really great and shows just how far we’ve come as an organisation. “We hope that the fourth ball in 2011 is just as successful!”

All proceeds from the night go towards our on-going work with vulnerable young people in Aberdeen.

The annual Befriend A Child quiz night attracted a fantastic 32 teams to the United Services Club on Friday, November 20th and saw last year’s winners triumph once again. Competing under the name ‘Could You Go a Chicken Supper Duncan Peter?’ the winners racked up an impressive 80 points to take the Karen Marr Trophy ahead of ‘Them in the Corner’ in second spot. The team from Henderson Loggie took third place.

This year’s quiz saw the usual array of bizarre rounds and (bad) jokes, with visits from Santa Claus and the King of Pop himself. Rounds ranged from musical countdown conundrums to famous songs sung in broad Doric, with a little helping of Christmas-themed general knowledge thrown in for good measure.

After a delicious buffet and busy raffle, Befriend A Child’s Alan Sanderson rounded off the evening with a disco. Special thanks to the winners for generously donating back £60 of the prize money, and special commiserations to the Newburgh Mafia. Well someone has to finish last!

Befriend A Child Scoop a Tasty Treat

Ice Cream manufacturers Mackie’s of Scotland have turned their hand to an all together more savoury snack with the launch of a new range of potato crisps.

And the local company – based near Rothienorman – generously decided to donate 20 boxes of the delicious crisps to Befriend A Child.

The snacks will be very popular with the children attending the Halloween Party at the United Services Club on November 1st – and I’m sure the volunteers will enjoy sampling a few of the flavours too!

More information on Mackie’s Crisps can be found at www.mackiescrisps.co.uk.

Aberdeen-based 80:20 Procurement Services have kindly donated a four-figure bonus to help Befriend A Child.

After significantly increasing their spending with local engineering products supplier Brammer over the past 12 months, 80:20 earned enough ‘Brammer Points’ to receive  £2,700 worth of free goods.

But in keeping with its business ethos, 80:20 reported the rebate to its main client BP and both companies have agreed to donate the money to charity. 80:20 has decided to round the donation up to £3,000.

80:20 Director Mandi Dorward said: “We’re delighted to help such a worthwhile charity such as Befriend A Child. I was extremely impressed with everyone at the charity and their commitment and passion to helping children in Aberdeen.

“The bonus due to 80:20 was a major surprise to us as we do not accept rebates from any of our suppliers thus ensuring that we provide a value-for-money service for our clients. After discussions with BP, we both agreed that the right thing to do was to make a donation to local charity.

“80:20 has decided to make Befriend A Child our nominated charity and we will continue to support them in any way we can in the future.

"80:20 Procurement Services is based at the city's East Tullos Industrial Estate and employs 14 staff.

Befriend A Child are ‘game’  for any new fund-raising venture and thanks to Andrew Sage Art and Entertainment Ltd, we stand to make £1 for every online unit sold of his creation, Symbotica.

Local businessman Andrew has very kindly agreed to support our work with vulnerable children while also promoting his simple, adaptable and fun new card game.

Symbotica is a game consisting of cards showing coloured symbols; the premise is to place each card so that it matches either the colour or symbol of the surrounding cards. The game area is restricted to 8 cards across and 8 up and down.

The game can be played in four different ways: the Standard, Simple and Five Card Symbotica games and the one player Symbotica Challenge.

Beyond the original Symbotica games, the cards can be used for many other games for various levels of skill and fun such as snap, pairs, set collecting, solitaire - or people can even create their own games!

To purchase Symbotica, and help Befriend A Child to Turn a Frown Upside down at the same time, visit www.symbotica.com and click on the online shop at the bottom of the home page.

Don’t forget to select the online donation edition!

Wheely Good Effort

Befriend A Child Committee member Liz Pirrie saddled up for a tough personal challenge in August as she pedalled her way around the gruelling Gore Bike Wear Sportive Series at Selkirk.  And despite being disappointed with herself for cycling (in her words) ‘only 45 miles’ on the day, Liz has plenty to be proud of, having raised a fantastic £637 for Befriend A Child.

In true Scottish fashion, the day started with pouring rain, howling winds and unseasonably low temperatures.  The route started with a climb of over 300 meters in the first 4 miles and Liz was forced to stop half way up to let the feeling of nausea pass before continuing.

Liz commented: “It took me two hours to reach the first feed stop at 25 miles and at that point I had to make the decision to drop down to the 45 mile route or be out on the road for (probably) 10 hours in those awful conditions!

“I finished the 45 miles in about 5 hours, having tackled some 1600 meters of climbing.

“What goes up must come down and I must confess I much prefer speeding down a hill at 30mph to crawling up it at 5mph!”

We would like to thank and congratulate Liz for her magnificent effort and dedication to raising funds for Aberdeen’s only 1:1 befriending service, despite the pain and unpleasant conditions!

The second annual Befriend A Child Golf Challenge Cup attracted 7 teams and also great weather at Inchmarlo on Friday, June 26.  A healthy competition between the teams saw Edinburgh based Scott Cappola emerge triumphant from the Stableford competition.  Team member Dean Coppola took the medal for longest drive at the 13th, while Allied Surveyors’ Gordon Gibb scooped the prize for nearest the pin at the 15th.  Grampian Electrical Services had the misfortune of finishing in seventh spot, but there were no losers on the day, with Befriend A Child raising over £2500.

A raffle was also drawn on the day with the grand prize of a weekend break for two at the Hilton Schiphol in Amsterdam, which went to Paul Hislop of Portlethen.  See More Photo's

Dan The Marathon Man

Befriender Dan Warrender is bravely pulling on his trainers and tackling the Glasgow Half Marathon on Sunday, September 6th in aid of Befriend A Child.

Dan has setup a online sponsor form at www.mycharitypage.com/dan. If you have some spare cash to help ease the 13 miles of pain then please sponsor him and leave a message!

Said Dan: “I've never done anything like this before, but since stopping smoking a couple of years ago I've been pretty active, doing weights and going to a kung-fu class. I'm training by running for 8-10 miles twice a week, and despite the odd blister its going good. I've set a fundraising target of £400, and so far I have £100 so it’s going well, but still all donations are warmly received!

GES Veterans came out on top in the second annual Befriend A Child 5-a-side tournament on Sunday, May 3rd.  A total of ten teams took part in the competition, which placed the emphasis on fun and saw mixed teams of all levels pulling on their trainers for a day of indoor football.  The event was generously sponsored by Eden Springs who supplied much needed bottled water to keep the ‘athletes’ fully hydrated.

The Wooden Spoon was awarded to the Dream Team while Sophie Little was awarded the prize for Player of the Tournament.

The Befriend A Child May Day Raffle was drawn on Friday, May 1st and the following lucky people all won prizes as follows:

Framed Befriend A Child T-shirt signed by Stefan Dennis – Margaret Rae.
A Carriage Clock donated by Aberdeen Lady Provost Sandra Stephen – Kath Smith.
Six Bottles of Wine – Paula Mathieson.
A Harmony Health and Beauty Voucher – Paul Rawling.
A Voucher for The Closet – Eric Meston.
A Voucher for the Sand Dollar Café – Donna Waiter.

Many thanks to all those who purchased a ticket.

Kemnay Youth Legends

Befriend A Child are more than £1200 better off thanks to the efforts of a team of four men from Inverurie.

The Kemnay Youth Legends team (from left) Ewan Lyle, Duncan Peter, Phil Adam and Mark Ingram who successfully finished the First Monster Challenge at Loch Ness.

The Kemnay Youth Legends
– including the charity’s own Communications and Funding Officer Duncan Peter – tackled the second annual First Monster Challenge in Inverness on Saturday, September 13th.  The tough 120km duathlon saw the lads running and cycling over all manner of terrain including forest paths and the Great Glen Way!

And the foursome – Ewan Lyle, Duncan Peter, Mark Ingram and Phil Adam – completed the gruelling task in a time of 8 hours, 25 minutes.

Their efforts were helped on the way by sponsorship from The Black Bull Inn in Inverurie, the Cray Trust and the Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative.

Fund-raising to the ‘fore’!

The first Befriend A Child Corporate Golf Day was held at Inchmarlo Golf Club near Banchory at the end of August.

Despite only four teams taking part, the glorious sunshine and a beautiful yet challenging course made for a successful day.

The foursomes tackled the 18 hole King’s Course – with varying levels of success!
Overall winners were the team from Dunavon House Hotel, who recorded a fantastic score of nett 59 in the Texas Scramble competition.

Next year’s date has already been secured for Friday, June 29th and more information is available from Alan or Duncan on 01224 210060.

Corking Stuff!

The wines of Portugal are for many, an untapped source. But for those who attended the first Befriend A Child wine tasting evening this is no longer the case after an evening of refinery, education and of course, plenty of wine drinking!

Well-known, and highly rated wine critic Carol Brown ensured the 30 budding wine experts in the making knew their Duas Quintas from their Roriz Reserva by the end of the evening, which also included blind tasting and quizzes to test out the group’s new found skills.

Wines for the event were supplied by both the Wine Society and Majestic Wine, ensuring that the ‘vinho’ was kept flowing.

Carol also spent time explaining themes such as Portuguese regions, methods of maturation and even threw in some fascinating facts about Cliff Richard’s Algarve wine estate!

“I always like to introduce people to new taste sensations at my wine events and although many of the tasters at this event enjoy Port, few had tasted the light wines from the country but will now certainly try wines from Portugal again,” explained Carol.

“The event was a sell out and it was great to see Befriend a Child’s first wine tasting so well supported.”

Among those who attended the event was Gordon Gibb of Allied Surveyors.

He commented: “I've always enjoyed wine but tend to stick to the same kinds.

“The wine tasting event was superbly hosted by Carol who educated everyone on how to sample the wine and how to appreciate the different wine on offer.

“Everyone really enjoyed the evening which was well organised by Befriend a Child - I can't wait till the next one.”

Inaugural Ball Was A Resounding Success

The inaugural Befriend A Child ball at the Ardoe House Hotel on Friday, February 8th raised a fantastic total of £16,658.  The auction alone - which included some fantastic items including an apartment in the Algarve and a signed Scotland Rugby shirt - collected £7750, with the table-top raffle taking in over £1900. With the inclusion of Gift Aid, the amount raised on the night will be closer to a magnificent £20,000!

As a local charity, Befriend A Child very much appreciate the support of the local business community, and without their help, could not have achieved that magnificent figure.  Our individual supporters also did us proud, and we were delighted to see so many people enjoying themselves in the name of our cause.

The feedback from all those who attended has been extremely positive and with that in mind, we have already booked the event for next year.  We would be delighted to have your support on Friday, February 27, 2009, and look forward to another successful Befriend A Child ball at the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel.

As you set your budget for the coming financial year, why not consider the Befriend A Child Ball as an ideal opportunity to entertain some of your valued clients?  Some of the corporate supporters who attended this year, have testified to the success of the evening and we will be delighted to welcome them back in 2009.

"We had a great night at the Befriend A Child Inaugural Ball.  All our guests were very impressed with the occasion and the cause.  From the opening song to the final fling, the band nailed every tune and ensured a full floor 'til the wee small hours.  We'll be back."  George Booth, Pentagon Freight

"The setting was perfect, with great food, plenty of fine wine and excellent service from all staff.  The cause itself is a very worthwhile one, which I was delighted to support. All in all, it was a great evening." Natalie White, Independent Mortgage Advisor.

Or why not take a table with friends or colleagues?  This year's ball proved to be a big hit with a number of work parties who took the opportunity to enjoy a social evening with workmates.  We promise good music, a good meal and good company!
